As part of its school holiday youth engagement plan, SPAR Nigeria recently organised a Track and Field competition called “SprintStar 2018” at the Dr. Philip Adegbile Sports Complex in Lagos.
The competition drew in over 2,000 participants from more than 100 schools, with the grand final being held on Saturday 11 August.
The competing race categories ranged from 50-200m for boys and girls aged 6-15. SPAR Nigeria rewarded all participating athletes with gifts such as vouchers, medals, and other SPAR branded items. The professional feel of the event with proper branding, medal podium and backdrop added to the atmosphere and overall experience for all of the participants.
Speaking at the final, John Goldsmith, Head of Marketing at SPAR Nigeria said: “We have identified the need to positively engage with pupils in extra-curricular activities during the vacation periods. SPAR is delighted to have shown its support in sponsoring the 2018 SprintStar Competition, hopefully helping some of Nigeria’s youngsters discover their talent in track and field competition.”
Expressing his joy at winning the 200m race for boys aged 13-15 in a time of 21.10 seconds, Olaolu Olatunde, Headboy and Captain of his school’s rugby team, said he thoroughly appreciates SPAR Nigeria’s efforts in organising these kinds of sporting events during the school holidays. “It has been great to develop my athletics skills further.”
